Hangover Help for Everyone

There is one question that those who partake in celebration – whether regularly or on occasion – have asked in at least one instance … WHY? Why is this happening to me? The truth is … no one knows. Scientists have speculated for decades but there are no proven facts that can pinpoint the causes of the after-effects of drinking alcohol.

Some scientists point to dehydration. Others to acetaldehyde (a toxic byproduct of ethanol breakdown in the body), low blood sugar or even high blood sugar as the culprit.

The Alcohol Hangover Research Group (AHRG) for the past five years has been testing the theories and has found that there might be some truth to the ‘the lighter the alcohol, the less of a hangover’ theory.

Because darker drinks, like bourbon and red wine, have higher levels of congeners (by-products of the fermentation process) they may worsen alcohol hangover severity, as explained by the AHRG in their research, which points to several interesting new hypotheses that you can learn more about here for the Wired version and here for the scientific version.

Another factor to consider when trying to figure out how to help a hangover is your drinking patterns. Casual drinkers tend to feel worse than habitual drinkers after celebrating. In general, men can put down more than women and genetics can play a role as well, as East Asians tend to have a lower tolerance for alcohol and can find themselves flushed after a few sips.

You might have heard some of the best ways to help a hangover (or prevent one) include: eating a heavy meal while drinking, taking B vitamins before you go to bed, drinking one glass of water with each drink you consume, and more. Visit RESQWATER’s Remedy page for more possible prevention methods.
